Dowry system

 Dowry literally means the property that a women brings to her husband or the property given to bride groom’s family by the bride. In French dowry is named as Dot. 

   In India dowry system is the biggest social evil. It shows that Indians in general are very possessive and greedy. It is a disgrace to our country. This evil has come down to us from olden days. It is fact that in ancient times also, parents used to give presents to their daughters at the time of marriage, but these presents were voluntary gifts. But with the passage of time this practice has grown into an evil custom. The curse of dowry is responsible for several dowry deaths every year. Today Marriages are not settled on the basis of the merits of a gril or boy but on the consideration of how much dowry she will be able to bring with her.

    Dowry is the price demanded by parents of the bride-groom from the parents of bride. In most cases people cannot afford to give dowry as demanded by the boys parents. Because of the greed of the parents of the groom. In these situations poor people are finding it very difficult to marry off their daughters. The interior position and economic dependence of women on men is also responsible for this evil practice. 

     Many poor girls became the victims and have to sacrifice their lives at the alter of dowry. We often hear that money unfortunate girls are beaten to death for bringing meager dowries. Because of the evil of the dowry the birth of a daughter is never welcomed in an Indian family. 

     It is felt by all the right thinking men that the evil of dowry should be removed from India. But some how this evil persists. It has taken more subtle forms. The so called Intellectuals of society who are raising their voices against it accept dowry behind the scenes. No sincere effort is made to remove this social evil. The rich people are absolutely to blame for this evil. They have a large amount of money and property. Rich people afford to spend a lot of money on the marriage of their daughters and give whatever they want in dowry. They indulge in conspicuous spending the middle class people are forced to do something to give a good dowry to their daughters, to do so they are forced to run into debt. Sometimes young girls have to sacrifice themselves to save their parents from humiliation.

    People should make collective effort to eradicate this menace of dowry in our society, so that every poor father can marry her daughter happily. Some governments have taken anti dowry steps which are truly appreciable steps no matter they were not successful at least they tried. 

Government and legislation can't only remove this menace , common people have to act. As early as possible we should do something to remove this social evil from our society. We should aware people about the steps by which it can be removed. Public opinion should be created against the system. From schools children and students must be taught about this social evil , how it affects poor families. Religious people should stand against it and tell people how big sin is this. Dowry and corruption are the two sides of same coin. Efforts should be made to eradicate these two social evils.

    Islam being the complete religion has strongly banned this vicious tradition of dowry system. The Holy Quran says, " They are your garments and you are their garments ". The verse amply reflects the status of female gender ( that is now a days disrespected) . The honor and dignity of this gender has been up held at all levels and capacities. The marriage alliance has been highly acclaimed by Islam that incorporates less expenditure and observes austerity. The glorious tradition by our highly reverend Prophet(PBUH) conveys that the marriage bond or alliance is bestowed upon by God's blessings in which the par involved observe simplicity and austerity. A girl with sublime character and God fearing must be preferred over all riches and wealth in the form of dowry while arranging a bond. It is only solution that would bring an end to this vicious and abominable practice of dowry system. Dowry system is one of the heinous evil of poor society. When we see around our society it is obvious that dowry is black spot and killing custom of our society. Various Surveys reveal that many poor girls become victims of this unseen evil by killing themselves. Most of the girls are badly treated in their in-laws on dowry. This doesn't only effect girls but also their family and close ones. It ks indeed a stigma on over society. In our books of customs without dowry marriage is void and only bride is eligible to marry who can fulfill the demands of her in-laws. This evil has snatched the happiness and actual right of women. It affects them mentally as well as it has serious impacts on girls family. Marriage is a sacred union and it will remain sacred only without these useless and evil customs.  

  We must educate our society about this social and other evils against women and let our women live happily and safe. We should encourage our women as they are the backbone of men. 

  If women are educated then the whole nation is in right direction.
